Uncomfortable truth here: This is a lumbar fusion. When people tell me they’re going to have spine surgery I think they romanticize their spine will be fixed. It will not. This X-ray is going to be famous. It is reportedly the spine of the guy who is suspected of gunning down UHC CEO. The suspect’s friends say this surgery was life changing for him. Well, it looks like it. It is barbaric.

It’s unlikely that anything changes in the system no matter how many CEOs are killed. That was evil and wrong no matter the motive. Worse, it was futile.

It wasn’t the CEO but the system. The system rewards providers with lots of money for doing this to people. Not just the surgeon. But the hospital, nurses, anesthetists, scheduling… everyone is on the payroll and rewarded for doing this. And because it is so expensive, everybody’s gotta buy protection from the medical mafia and that’s why insurers get so much money.

It is a big money vortex where your employer inputs money to insurers to defray the risk of spendy medical procedures and Pham prices . But the more expensive the procedures and drugs get (average cost of all new drugs on market in 2022 was $70,000 per year). the more likely you are to ask your employer but more expensive policies from the insurer. They are all incentivized to price everything higher every year. Killing that CEO? That $23 million dollar a year CEO will be replaced within weeks by another being paid even MORE money. And now a security detail. Just part of your “healthcare” premium.

These low back surgeries get done all the time bc UHC refuses to pay for conservative care for these problems. Many people are told they “need” surgery because they have a disc herniation. Nonsense. Disc herniationa are difficult to be sure, but people have surgery mostly bc they are forced to pay out of pocket for anything other than surgery. So, Surgery is effectively “free” and only later do people realize it destroys their lives. Yes, Ocassionally somebody gets away with a surgery and has a better life, but it’s unusual.

Research on low back surgeries shows people who get surgery feel better than those going the conservative route for 1-3 years. The groups are about the same at 5 years. Past 5 years, those who went conservative did better than those who were told they “needed” surgery and did it. The Surgical group going in for.the second surgery or on chronic pain medication. Ask anyone who has had a back surgery. Most have had more than one or will tell you they would never do it again. Or, both. .

This is a travesty in our system when help is readily available in a safe,chiropractic approach. The system financially penalizes those who choose the safe and sensible chiropractic path by forcing them to pay themselves. It is well worth it, but UHC, BCBS, HealthPartners, Medicare, Medicare, etc… ALL do it. They will help for a couple of visits but if you have this guy’s problems that’s just not enough. And many people DO have this kind of problem.

It is unfortunate the system is rigged for profit and not for your health. But, we are here for those who choose health. This was avoidable. Take care of your spine. It will take care of you.
