Can Chiropractic Help Otitis Media (Ear Infections)?

The short answer is yes. The reason why may surprise you.
Understanding Ear Infections
It’s not because chiropractic adjustments are a treatment for ear infections. It’s important to understand that ear infections in toddlers and babies are NOT simply due to a short and flat Eustachian tube, as is commonly described. If that were the case, adjusting a baby’s spine would have zero impact. But, the reverse is true. There are many years of documentation showing the resolution of otitis media through chiropractic care.
The Anatomy of Ear Infections
To grasp how chiropractic can help, let’s first look at the anatomy involved. The area where symptoms and fluid build up is called the middle ear. This space is located between the tympanic membrane (ear drum) and the inner membrane leading to the fluid-filled cochlea, which contains the nerves for hearing. Normally, this space is just that—a space with three moving bones, the ossicles, connecting the outer ear drum to the inner window that moves the fluid in the cochlea.
When the middle ear fills with fluid, the tympanic membrane doesn’t move well when sound waves hit it. Consequently, the ossicle bones also struggle to move, leading to diminished hearing. Imagine a rock band’s bass drum without a hole in the front. If it’s sealed, the sound won’t resonate properly. Now, picture that drum filled with water. That’s what happens when fluid fills the middle ear.
The Pain of Ear Infections
The presence of fluid in the middle ear causes the tympanic membrane to retract and stretch tightly over the first ossicle bone connected to it. This can lead to significant pain, causing your child to cry. The immediate goal is to alleviate pressure and control pain. But how can we remove the fluid from the middle ear?
The ear connects to the back of the throat through the Eustachian tube, allowing air to move when the tympanic membrane vibrates. If this opening is constricted for too long, the tympanic membrane may rupture spontaneously, leading to drainage from the ear. This rupture can relieve pain, but repeated episodes make healing more difficult.
Causes of Constriction
There are two primary reasons for the constriction of this opening. First, the muscle around it, known as the tensor palatini, can act like a sphincter. If it’s too tense or spasming, it won’t allow air to escape, leading to fluid accumulation and sometimes bacteria. You might have experienced this pressure relief when yawning during a plane landing.
The second reason is that enlarged tonsil tissue can block the opening at the back of the throat. Tonsils enlarge due to infections, acting as part of the immune system. They trap bacteria and present them to the immune system, swelling like a muscle when exercised by repeated infections.
Chiropractic's Role
The first issue, where the tensor palatini muscle is constricted, can be addressed by ensuring the nerve controlling it isn’t firing too much. This over-firing can occur due to subluxation of the spinal vertebrae. In children, subluxation can happen at birth or even before, especially if they are constrained in the womb. After birth, subluxation can occur from improper positioning in car seats.
When the spine is out of alignment, it irritates the nerve, leading to muscle spasms that prevent air from escaping the middle ear. Correcting the spine alleviates nerve irritation and muscle tension, allowing for better function of the tensor palatini muscle.
The second issue, where enlarged tonsils block the tube, also improves with spinal correction. Chiropractic adjustments help reduce muscle tension in the neck, promoting lymph drainage from the tonsils.
Why Antibiotics Aren't the Answer
Since the problem isn’t bacteria but drainage, the solution to ear infections isn’t antibiotics. In fact, antibiotics can increase the likelihood of future infections. They can destroy the immune system and push children toward autoimmune hypersensitivity, leading to conditions like asthma and allergies.
Studies show that antibiotic administration increases the recurrence rate of infections by 4-6 times compared to untreated cases. While some may argue that antibiotics prevent serious complications like mastoiditis, the risk of that occurring is only 1 in 25,000.
Each round of antibiotics raises the risk of future health problems, including a 37% increase in asthma risk, a 33% increase in food allergies, and a 26% increase in diabetes. For boys, there’s even a 45% increase in anxiety and depression risk.
A Holistic Approach to Health
The healthy solution lies in improving the immune system and ensuring proper drainage between the middle ear and the back of the throat. Modifying the diet to keep mucus thin and manageable can be beneficial, which may mean avoiding dairy temporarily.
The holistic path involves ensuring that the nerves function properly again. Managing bacteria in the back of the throat can be done with zinc and vitamin C sprays, which are bacteriostatic. They don’t kill bacteria but prevent them from multiplying. Long-term, probiotics can help restore a healthy microbiome. For children up to 4 or 5 years old, B. bifidus is the main strain, while older kids can benefit from L. acidophilus.
The Path to Recovery
The journey to health begins with checking the spine and correcting any interference. Restoring the microbiome and possibly limiting dairy intake are also vital steps. It’s that simple.
Please share this with parents who are struggling. Chiropractic adjustments for toddlers are gentle and vastly different from those for adults or teenagers. Some parents may find it hard to imagine adjusting their child, but it’s a light pressure applied with a finger or instrument. Kids typically respond well to this natural and healthy approach.
Let’s say you’ve already navigated the cycle of ear infections and antibiotics, leading to tubes in the ears. Don’t be hard on yourself; you didn’t know what you didn’t know. But now you do. The root cause of the problem isn’t addressed by antibiotics or tubes, and the immune system may have been compromised.
What now? It’s not too late. Your child can still be helped and put back on the path to health. Corrective supplementation for the microbiome, along with addressing spinal subluxations, can lead to remarkable improvements. We’ve seen this happen many times, and the results are heartwarming. Everyone involved feels happier and healthier.
